My Hair Woes!

Dear MyKia
Is brushing my hair really damaging if I'm natural? I so miss just brushing it since I've been natural, but I was told I am damaging my hair and I shouldn't brush it. What do you think?

Hi Missing

Brushing your natural hair can be damaging if you are not using the proper brush. Natural Bristle brushes tend to be less damaging then plastic. Remember now that you are natural, moistures natural and added are very important to your hair. Brushing your hair with a natural bristle brush will stimulate blood flow, which will help stimulate your natural oils and moisture to surface and promote healthy hair. Now when you are brushing alway be sure that if your hair is dry use a daily moisturizer(not grease). Parting your hair in small section beginning at the nape and brush from scalp to ends. Continuing this technique through out your entire head. This should help soothe that brushing desire in a healthy way. Thanks for your question, hope this helps!

Dear MyKia
I have been going natural for about 3 months and it is the most frustrating thing in the world. My scalp is so irritated and dry. The more I grease it the worst it seems to get. What should I use? None of my old products are working

 Dear Natural D
You are facing a very common problem with my sisters that are in “transition”. First you must throw away all your “relaxer hair” products. These may have worked on hair that is being conditioned by a relaxer, but hair that is in transition, have different needs. Try to focus on products that are formulated for natural hair types. Then you must identify the problem with your scalp. Is it dry skin or dandruff? Also, are you lacking moisture or oil? These are questions that must be answered before we can apply treatment. Know that moist is supplied by water and oil is supplied by, well yeah you guessed it, Oil. Scalp that is lacking moisture can be replenished with shampoos and conditioners that are moisturizing. Also the intake of more water is extremely important to the lack of moisture in your scalp. When the hair appears dull and has no natural shine, then the use of oil (NOT GREASE: based in Petroleum or Mineral oils) is necessary. Also, remember your hair and scalp, although they are attached sometimes they have separate needs. To be sure stop by your local salon and have a consultation to determine your hair and scalp type.
